Cable modem problem

I have a dual boot machine... WinXP and ManDrake 9.2. Before MD I was
using Redhat 9.0. With RH I had no problem connecting. Now I'm a neophyte
when it comes to Linux, but I've spent two days searching the web, and
trying various fixes. Nothing is working yet.

I have a Thomson DCM245 cable modem which is connected via USB. Most
articles are saying to go with a NIC, but I'm attached via NIC to a hub
which connects to an access point. Besides I would hope that USB would
work. When I check the hardware configuration I have a error message:
Module unknown for the cable modem and two of the 4 USB ports. I'm assuming
this is because of drivers? Could I download drivers from RH? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What brand/model computer are you using? What was your RH9 setup? Is
your MD setup _exactly_ the same?

I've searched also with some leads popping up. See below. What did
you try, what _exactly_ were the results?

Connected to what? The hub?

Your MD/XP box connects to hub via ethernet cable? What does "access
point" mean?

I am confused about your setup. Why a hub? Why usb?

Assume you have more than one computer connected to hub. True?

Does XP work properly with current setup? Can your MD/XP box connect
directly to modem via ethernet cable and work? via usb cable and
work? Tell us _exactly_ as possible what you have tried.

I have a hard time believing that something "broke" with just the
switch to MD (it's based on RH), but you never know. Did see some
posts regarding APIC incompatibilities with some motherboards/chipsets
and know that this _is_ an area where distros change/vary. Also many
changes in ACPI support (but doubt MD tried a backport patch to a
2.4.x kernel).

In any case, to help, we will need as precise details as possible on
your RH setup that worked as well as your current setup _and_ the
fixes you've attempted (both hardware and software). If it's not
something readily detected, you'll have to dig into system details
that newbies fear to tread (and old hands avoid if possible). Let's
try to find a "simple" solution first. Did you search the Mandrake
mailing list archives?

Keep in mind that we have NO data or specs re: your system/setup
except what you provide. RCA/Thomson doesn't even post a handbook or
useful specs for your modem -- I looked.

For starters, provide a copy of the output of dmesg:
[***@pbrain]$ dmesg
(easiest if done from a desktop terminal, eg., KDE's Konsole using
edit>copy)

For USB background try:
http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html
http://www.linux-usb.org/usb2.html (the "current" usb standard)

I presume from your post that you're trying to set up a broadband
gateway on your (wireless?) lan. Using an NIC could well be easier, but
the cdcether module may work for USB (it would for mine, if I connected
it using USB). There's no problem using two NICs in one machine if
that's what's eating you.
